Wholesale deletion of useful categoroiies

Please advise why you are depopulating and deleting "Historical" cats. There is a difference between Category:Historical images of Akbar's Tomb and Category:Black and white photographs of Akbar's Tomb. Both can be true. -Broichmore (talk) 05:50, 11 August 2026 (UTC)

This is as per the past CFD at Commons:Categories for discussion/2019/09/Category:Historical images. In short, "historical images of X" is a vague category, so it's better putting them under specific categories like "black and white photographs of X" for photographs, "X in art" for art works, or by-year categories. So in the case of this image, which took a great effort to upload, and assign to a (time associated) history cat, chosen in keeping with what seemed to be prevalent throughout the project. It was not even reassigned to Category:Agra in the 19th century, where It should at the least been re-allocated to a new Category:Agra in the 1840s. Instead It's just easier to throw it, with hotcat (requiring little study) into a general cat with all the modern bulk stuff, of no real value at Category:Jama Masjid, Agra, how can that be making it more specific, it's not even equivalent. I just wasted my time, and energy, and am therefore unwelcome on this project. Sweat of brow for nothing. A splinter of wood hidden in a forest, taken from a specific into a generalisation. I'm at a disadvantage here, the work I specialize in taking so much time garners onlya small number of edits, and is easily overuled by people modifying very similar existing cats, by giving them suffixes like (flat list) then using hotcat to make millions of resulting cheap edits, with which to gain elevation to browbeat honest well meaning editors. Definitions

Please advise why you are depopulating and deleting cats. such as Category:Panoramics of Akbar's Tomb Panoramic as a word is the correct title here. These are superfluous edits. Category removal question.

In 11 files plus this file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Handshakes_in_Singapore&curid=193039275&diff=1268727565&oldid=1222600509 - you removed the Category:Traditions.

Why did you do that, when other countries within Category:Handshakes by country include a "Traditions" category? Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 21:52, 30 August 2026 (UTC)

The main reason is COM:OVERCAT. Category:Handshakes is already categorized under Category:Traditions, so Category:Handshakes in Singapore should be categorized under Category:Traditions of Singapore instead. Sbb1413 (he) (talk • contribs • uploads) 03:19, 31 August 2026 (UTC)

Train station or railway station?

I noted that you renamed a lot of train station categories to railway station categories like this or that?. I agree with you that this seems to be a more natural terminology. However, are you aware of the reason, why these have been called train stations so far? I guess that there was a big conflict between the terminology railway (preferred in Europe) and railroad (preferred in USA). This has been resolved by using neutral terms like "rail transport" and "train station." Thus, I propose, not to waste time and effort to rename these categories again, because too many changes will confuse other users like me, and will occasionally motivate the US based community, to revert all the changes that you have made in good faith. Please check Category:Train station name signs by country for the common terminology outside of India and the UK. NearEMPTiness (talk) 02:21, 31 August 2026 (UTC)

Thanks. I keep those renamings restricted to country subdivisions, while leaving "train stations" for countries. There was a CFD with a consensus of using "train stations" for countries, and country subdivisions are free to use preferred terms: Commons:Categories for discussion/2024/07/Category:Railway stations in India.
