Congratulations to the Egan Family for winning an award in the Newcomers section of the 2011 Coca-Cola Coast Care Awards. Managed by TIDY Northern Ireland, these reward outstanding efforts by individuals and groups to clean up our beaches, rivers and loughs.
The two sisters, Margaret and Sinead, and their five children, Celine, Caitlin, Coco, Mollie and Jake started volunteering with Mourne Heritage Trust in the summer of 2010, appropriately enough on a beach clean. When they turned up on Newcastle Beach and failed to find the organisers that day, they found some black binliners and, undeterred, went about cleaning the beach themselves.
Every time a beach clean or litter lift is included in the list of events proposed for the Conservation Volunteers the Egan family always turn out in force and are reluctant to leave until the beach or waterway is spotless, regardless of the weather or time of day. They are some of the most committed volunteers Mourne Heritage Trust has had the pleasure of counting on as part of the Conservation Volunteer team.
The award was presented by Minister for the Environment, Alex Attwood MLA, at an awards event held at Stormont.
